What is an Alphasax?

The Alphasax is a small version of an alto saxophone especially designed for younger children in mind. Whilst this instrument is pitched and feels similar to a 'normal' alto saxophone, there are key differences to enable younger children who wish to play the saxophone the chance to learn.

The alphasax has been completely redesigned to enable smaller hands to cope with the keys.  It has a few less keys due to its size but isn’t missing anything that is needed at the early stages of learning the saxophone.  A child will learn in exactly the same way as they would if learning the alto sax, but won’t be lumbered with an instrument that is far too big and heavy for them.  The Alphasax weighs just 1.48kg, making it highly portable and accessible during play.

Trevor James saxophones are renowned across the world for being incredibly high quality, user friendly and sensational instruments. Based in Lenham (UK), Trevor James distribute their multi-award-winning and popular specialist saxophones around the world that are widely respected by teachers, professional players and students alike!

The 371a Alpha sax is a phenomenal instrument designed specifically with the younger and newer player in mind. Many children often struggle to hold saxophones when first starting due to their increased weight and size, however the Alphasax overcomes this, and can help many learn as much as 2 or 3 years earlier than they originally would have been able to, allowing them to start their musical journey even earlier!

Ease Of Play

A variant of the saxophone specially designed for beginners and unique to Trevor James, the 371a Alpha features a specially tweaked key layout for smaller hands and the removal of several keys and notes at the extreme ends of the range. This combined with the fact that the Alphasax is approximately 33% lighter in weight compared to the traditional alto saxophone makes for a more accessible learning experience for smaller players first getting to grips with the instrument.

Differences from standard Alto Saxes include:

  • The top D key has been adjusted to fit small hands
  • Redesigned G# and low C# keys are now easier to reach
  • Bb bis and side Bb keys are retained and adjusted for ease of play
  • Low D# and C keys are now easier to reach
  • The left hand palm keys for top D#, E and F have been removed
  • The right hand side F# keys and side C key have been removed
  • The low B & Bb keys have been removed
  • The Alphasax retains a fully chromatic range from low C to high D
  • The 'missing' keys are those at the extremes of the instrument's range that are not usually required until later on in the student's development. In all other respects the Alphasax plays and sounds like a conventional alto saxophone.
