Reclaiming the Soul of the Industry
Despite growing consumer demand for sustainable options, large swathes of the modern music industry have fallen into the trap of corporate gatekeeping, platform economics, and disposable, short-lived "instrument-shaped objects." This throwaway culture is a tragedy for both the player and the planet.
Simon Pollard, Managing Director of Millers Music says “With up to 90% of beginners abandoning their musical journey in the first year, forcing families to buy cheap, unrepairable gear is a fundamentally broken model”. Millers Music is taking a stand against this structural waste. Through expanded rental and circular collection schemes, we are proving that providing access to high-quality, fully repairable, and professionally set-up instruments is a far better way to foster lifelong musicians. Pollard added, “There are millions of great instruments sitting silent and just waiting to be liberated”.
A New Chapter for Cambridge
To scale this vision, Millers is moving its operations out of traditional city-centre retail and into the hub at the Allia Future Business Centre—placing our team at the heart of Cambridge’s forward-thinking innovation community.
Supported by a dedicated regional logistics and processing facility, this move allows us to scale our circular infrastructure: actively harvesting the "urban goldmine" of high-quality, underused instruments currently sitting silent in homes, refurbishing them and putting them back into active musical service.
21 Pianos at King’s College Chapel: A Monumental Farewell
Before transitioning to our new home, Millers will demonstrate the extraordinary power and longevity of the piano with a historic cultural event.
On 17th November, inside the iconic King’s College Chapel, Millers will support the performance of Richard Causton’s monumental work, "21 Pianos" - last performed a decade ago by providing all the instruments.
Yet while they fill this historic venue with sound, thousands of children across face a far quieter reality. Cutbacks and underfunding mean that for countless young people, the transformative joy of making music is slipping out of reach, not for a lack of talent, but for a lack of an instrument. We believe every child deserves a voice.
That is why this landmark evening will also shine a spotlight on Piano Equals, Millers’ flagship circular initiative placing unused pianos directly into underfunded schools. Together, we can ensure that these forgotten instruments don't just gather dust they awaken the potential of a whole new generation of musicians.
Passing the Torch: The Guitar Lab x Velvet Fret
Earlier this year, we introduced The Guitar Lab at Millers. Following an incredible response from the Cambridge guitar community, we are delighted to announce the next phase of this project with local luthier Gab from Velvet Fret.
Gab will be opening a dedicated, independent guitar sanctuary on King Street this December. Over the coming weeks, Millers will transition its current guitar offering over to Velvet Fret, ensuring local players retain access to expert luthiery and community-first service right in the heart of town.
To mark this transition, a curated selection of guitars and accessories will be available with exclusive promotional offers from our current showroom prior to Velvet Fret’s grand opening.
