MUSIC EDUCATION IN CRISIS

The UK has a rich history of music making but music education has been eroded over the last decade with a chronic lack of investment. Teachers and educators are doing more than ever with less and many students lack the opportunities of previous generations.

Serious inequality exists and is widening

Reflecting a wider change to equality in equality, music education is now more unequal than ever.

World class education being undermined

Music is crucial part of a balanced and rounded education. After suffering years of underfunding and chronic underinvestment many schools now lack the equipment to support our world-leading teaching efforts. As a result a worrying number of schools now have no music program at all.

Music is valuable to us all

Just think of the times you've listened to your favourite song, danced the night away, or listened to an incredible performance. These moments are just one part of our world-leading creative industries that impacts all our lives. Together they generate £116bn of value to the UK economy and are one of our great exports.

Not only that, susic provides children and young people with unique opportunities to express themselves, explore creativity, work hard at something and shine. Experiences that stay with them and can shape their entire lives but sadly more children are being denied this opportunity.

Donate YOUR PIANO

WHy SHOULD YOU CONSider DONATING YOUR PIANO?

The plight of many schools and rising inequality are issues that many of us will already be aware of but there are many other reasons we believe you should consider donating your piano to organisations who will find new value.

Selling a piano privately is not always easy and sometimes impossible

Pianos are big and difficult to move, they can be especially difficult to sell privately as they can require expertise to assess and move. You'll find hundreds of pianos on marketplaces being offered for little to nothing. Despite common perceptions, pianos don't last forever! Even relatively new pianos with manufacturer warranties only usually cover the first owner and so private buyers are reluctant spending hundreds or even thousands of pounds without reassurance!

Donating to our scheme can actually save you money

A piano cannot be easily brought to a shop for an assessment, this alone can be costly at £60-100+, with another £150-£400+ for removal and disposal especially if the piano is a grand or not on the ground floor. We ask for a delivery contribution as part of our scheme but it actually saves you money versus the alternative of removal and disposal.

You're helping to save the planet

Save up to 97% of the carbon cost CO2e of a new, imported piano by reusing one located within 50km of a school. With careful maintenance acoustic pianos can last for decades, even centuries, quality digital pianos even can last for decades if the parts are available. Unfortunately many old acoustic pianos are simply thrown in a skip and many cheaper electronic pianos lack spare parts or schematics adding to a growing waste problem.

To genuinely make a difference

For many people who donate to us, it's knowing that their piano is going to a good home and potentially serve a community for years if not decades and genuinely make a difference that matters most. Your generosity could enable future generations to benefit from the same life-changing opportunities you or your family did and help create the musical stars of the future.

Would your school or organisation benefit from a piano?

Your school or organisation can apply for an instrument or instruments to help you enrich lives within your community. We have a form that starts the process, this helps us to understand your needs, we can then carefully match your organisation with a quality piano from one of our generous donors.

We can organise everything: delivering with professional piano movers, tunings ourselves or putting you in touch with local tuners, and helping with fundraising or contributions to delivery costs.

What does Pianos Equals aim to achieve?

"Our vision at Millers Music is to inspire and unleash musical creativity by making high quality instruments accessible and sustainable for all". Simon Pollard, Managing Director

We passionately believe in business being a force for good but through our work in local communities we uncovered huge problems in music education and provision. We created Piano Equals as a first-of-its-kind, unique piano reuse and recycling scheme to help tackle some of these and contribute to some of the biggest challenges we face: namely widening inequality and our transition to a low carbon economy, also known as Net Zero.

We believe sustainability is an opportunity for the Music Industry to lead the way to a more circular and equitable future. Instruments have been sustainable for centuries, especially pianos. If made to a high quality and with careful maintenance they can last for decades It is only recently that many products have become less repairable and less sustainable. This is something we're committed to changing.

You can find out more about how Piano Equals aims to achieve this below.

The huge opportunity FOR US ALL in reusing old pianos

Pianos, and musical instruments generally, hold a special place in our hearts. They are unlike many other possessions in our homes, often having poured our heart and soul into learning with them as trusty partners . Quality acoustic pianos can last for decades, even centuries with careful maintenance but many are no longer desirable for customers to buy as tastes change.

The most sustainable pianos are the ones we already have!

Lots of acoustic pianos were actually made in the UK or Europe and so their carbon cost has already been incurred. There is only a small, incremental carbon cost to assess and move the instrument to a new home where is can give years or decades more service. Better still, we use skills in the UK to move and maintain these instruments which will build a more sustainable future for us all.

Can't schools just buy digital pianos instead?

They can and digital pianos can be a great option for many organisations, they are lighter, more flexible, and verstatile but they also come with their own challenges. They have a much shorter lifespan than an acoustic piano, some new electronic instruments only last 1-3 years then they can be difficult, if not impossible, to repair because of a lack of spare parts, schematics, or repairers. We are advocates for reusing quality electronic instruments and have provided these to schools as part of our scheme. We believe a mix of acoustic and digital instruments is often the best solution.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do you not accept all pianos?

Acoustic pianos are effectively infinitely repairable, however, this doesn't mean it is economic to repair them all. Some pianos, such as older pianos may need significant work to ensure they last. This could cause frequent expenses for the organisation who recieves the piano. Therefore, we carefully assess instruments using our expertise and select instruments that we believe will not create a large cost to the organisation in need.

Are you registered as a charity?

No, we are not a charity, we are a registered Limited Liability Company. Other structures for our scheme are under consideration for the future. We do not make any money from this donation scheme and, in fact, we commit significant resources internally and contribute financially to the scheme. You will be able to read more in our Impact Reports which we plan to release annually.

How do I donate a piano?

Simply click on one of our Donate buttons on this page and fill out the form.

Where will my piano go?

We donate pianos to an array of organisations in need. This includes, but is not limited to, schools, care homes, charities and community centres.

Who can donate?

Anyone in the UK! If you have a working-piano and wish to gift it to a new home, you can apply to donate.

Can I specify which organisation will recieve my donated piano?

Yes and no. When you donate your piano to us, we will typically have a list of organisations requiring a donation and will give your piano to the organisation whose requirements best match your piano. However, if, for example, you wish to donate your piano to your local Primary School, then reach out to us and we can help you to organise delivery and all other essential bits.

What is the step-by-step piano donation process?

Step 1: Fill out your piano donation application.
Step 2: Our team will assess your piano and state whether it is donatable.
Step 3: If successful we will provide details of where to deliver your piano to. If you need help we can organise for our professional piano movers to collect.
Step 4: We'll assess your piano and once allocated will confirm a school or organisation that it is being donated to.

Will you pick up the piano from my home?

Yes, we can organise piano collection from your home if that is your preference.

I have found a new home for my piano. How do I cancel my donation application?

Just reach out to us via email or phone and we can cancel your application for you.

Can I donate other musical instruments?

We work with organisations who require more than just pianos. If you have a different instrument that is fully-functioning that you wish to go to a new home, let us know and we will see if you have an organisation on our list who is looking for that instrument.

Can you recycle my piano?

Pianos can contain precious materials that could be recycled such as virgin wood, cast iron, and precious metals such as steel and copper in the strings plus many older pianos can contain ivory and lead in the keys which can be hazardous. However disassembling a piano takes many hours and doesn't cover the cost of the materials covered. We're working on schemes locally to facilitate this as we believe it's hugely important.
