Our Story
170 Years In The Making
Millers Music has been at the heart of Cambridge’s musical voice, guiding generations of players from their very first notes to a lifetime of creative joy.
Our Story
From our very earliest days, our philosophy was simple: musical potential should never be limited by instrument quality. We knew that to build a musician for life, you had to give them a tool built to last a lifetime. Nearly two centuries later, that foundational belief remains completely unchanged.
For 170 years, Millers Music has been the custodian of Cambridge’s musical voice, guiding generations of players from their very first notes to a lifetime of creative joy. Anchored in our historic city’s global legacy of innovation and sustainability, we are pivoting our heritage toward a circular future—championing premium instruments built to last, be repaired, and be reused for centuries to come.
In 1856, the first notes of Millers Music were struck in the heart of Cambridge. Founded on the bedrock of traditional craftsmanship and deep technical expertise, we opened our doors to serve a community of scholars, artists, and families who understood that a musical instrument is not a commodity—it is a lifelong companion.
Our Philosophy
Today, Millers Music is undergoing its most vital evolution yet, and it is being directly shaped by the unique city we call home. Modern Cambridge has become a world-renowned leader in global innovation and sustainability. It is a place where forward-thinking minds rewrite the rules of technology, science, and environmental responsibility.
As a historic Cambridge business, we believe it is our duty to apply that same visionary, sustainable thinking to the music industry.
We have watched the modern musical market succumb to a toxic, linear economic model. Governed by faceless online warehouses and Big Tech algorithms, the industry is continually flooded with cheap, un-repairable, disposable products. These "Instrument-Shaped Objects" exist solely to extract quick sales dollars, crowding out local expertise and turning what should be a lifelong passion into immediate landfill e-waste.

The Circular Revolution
Inspired by our city’s leadership in sustainability, we are drawing a line in the sand. We are transitioning Millers Music away from the traditional, volume-heavy retail model to build a truly values-based, activist business. We are anchoring our future in a 100% Circular Economy for Music, driven by the principles of community, longevity, repair, and reuse:The Right to Repair: Our workshop is our fortress.
We don't replace; we restore. If an instrument breaks, our technicians fix it, keeping premium materials and heritage skills in active circulation. The Second Life Project & Piano Equals: We actively rescue, refurbish, and recirculate pre-owned acoustic and digital instruments, liberating the massive amounts of "embodied carbon" sitting forgotten in the nation's attics.Accessible Quality:
Through our pioneering rental initiatives, we put elite, lifetime instruments into the hands of students for a low monthly cost, proving that sustainability and affordability go hand in hand.We are no longer just a shop; we are a movement. We are here to bring you the very best humanity can create—instruments engineered to last a lifetime, not the very worst built for a landfill.

OUR STORY
Founded in 1856, by Albert Tubelcain Miller, Millers Music is one of the UK’s longest standing piano and music retailers.
Across the years our rich heritage has spanned across a multitude of departments and adaptations (we were actually the first store in Cambridge to have a working TV!).
Yet one thing has always remained in the Millers sphere…Pianos.
And in particular, a passion to deliver high quality pianos and inspire more and more people to let piano into their life.

MODERN INNOVATION

Fast forward to 2012 and Millers was taken over by Simon Pollard, who utilised his extensive knowledge of the music industry and particularly the piano market to revolutionise Millers into becoming a modern business that blends our expertise with technological innovation in order to deliver the best possible service to our customers.
Over the past decade, Simon and the rest of our team have travelled the world, visiting piano factories, understanding the craft of piano making and exploring the levels of dedication, quality control and care that goes into every instrument we select.
Our travels have taken us across Europe, Asia, America and everywhere in between in order to understand the various approaches each piano manufacturer takes towards their instruments and how they execute their ideas in reality.
