The Casio PX870 is the new flagship of the world-renowned Privia line of digital pianos, designed to give you a true piano experience. With an exceptionally clear sound based on the Steinway & Sons D274, an improved four-speaker system, and premium-feeling textured keytops, the PX870 has unique features that make it an excellent first digital piano. The Privia line of pianos offer a great playing experience for those just starting out their musical journey, and the PX-870 digital piano continues Casio's reputation of offering fantastic features at lower price points than many of its competitors.
Sound
The PX-870's 'Grand Piano' sound is based off of Steinway & Sons D274; the most popular concert instrument in the world. Its clarity of tone and percussiveness is recreated faithfully on the PX-870, with 'Mellow' and 'Bright' options to easily change the hardness of sound. The improved four-speaker setup combines with the AiR Sound Source to give better spatial perception of the piano.
Touch
The Tri-Sensor II keyboard action is heavier than competing instruments; more force is required to play loudly, something which teachers will often recommend to their students to help build dexterity more quickly. Casio put more attention into their keytops than most other manufacturers, which makes their instruments feel more luxurious, and that's no different here.
Features
Standard features (such as metronome, one-track recording, and a handful of other sounds) are all present here, along with two headphone inputs and USB-MIDI to Host. The piano can also connect to an iOS device using a USB cable (some iOS devices will require the Camera Connection Kit) to gain access to Casio's Chordana Play App; this gives touch access to the piano's sounds and settings, as well as digital scores for built-in music.
Summary
If you're looking for a starter piano, either to start your own musical journey or to offer the opportunity to your child, the Casio Privia PX-870 is a great choice for your first instrument. Its incredibly slim design will allow it to fit well into smaller homes (especially useful if its for use in a bedroom) and will be a great companion for beginners aiming to reach above the early grades.
