Apply NowHow do I size instrument an instrument?
Teachers will often provide you with the right sizing but you can ready our guide on sizing a String instrument from home, read out detailed guide below, or alternatively make a booking with one of our demonstrators in our showroom to size your instrument.
Book an Instrument SizingChoosing the correct violin size is important for comfort, technique, and long-term enjoyment of playing. At our showroom, we’re always happy to size players in person for the most accurate fit and guidance. However, we understand that visiting in person isn't always convenient and so sizing from home is a simple and effective alternative. The easiest way to determine the right size at home is to measure the player's arm length: have them fully extend their left arm straight out to the side (parallel to the ground), and measure from the base of the neck to the center of the palm. Once you have that measurement, you can compare it to our violin sizing chart, which correlates specific arm lengths with violin sizes ranging from 1/16 to full-size (4/4).
To double-check the fit with a violin you may already have, place the instrument under the player’s chin in playing position and have them extend their left arm underneath the neck toward the scroll. Ideally, the fingers should be able to curl comfortably around the scroll with a slight bend in the elbow. If the arm is too straight or straining, the violin is likely too big; if the scroll is too close to the wrist, it may be too small. If you’re unsure, we’re happy to offer video consultations or provide printable guides to help you measure more confidently. Getting the right size ensures the best playing experience and helps avoid developing poor posture or technique.
| Violin Size | Arm Length (cm) | Approx. Age Range* |
|---|---|---|
| 1/16 | 36-39cm or less | 3-5 years |
| 1/10 | 40-43cm | 5-6 years |
| 1/8 | 44-46cm | 6-7 years |
| 1/4 | 47-51cm | 7-8 years |
| 1/2 | 52-56cm | 8-10 years |
| 3/4 | 57-60cm | 10-12 years |
| 4/4 (Full size) | 60cm or more | 12 years to adult |
Sizing a cello from home can be done with a few simple measurements. One helpful method is to measure the distance from the player’s shoulder to the middle of their palm with the arm extended down naturally—this gives a good estimate of arm length, which helps determine the appropriate cello size. You can also use the player’s height as a general guide: adults and taller teens usually need a full-size (4/4) cello, while younger students may require smaller sizes like 3/4, 1/2, or 1/4. The right size should allow the player to sit comfortably with the cello between their knees and reach the fingerboard easily without overstretching.
If you’re unsure, it’s always a good idea to check with the player’s teacher, who can provide personalized guidance based on their playing level and build. Teachers often have experience helping students find the right size and may have them try a few different options. You’re also very welcome to visit our showroom, where our staff can assist you in trying out various sizes in person. A well-fitted cello makes a big difference in comfort, technique, and overall enjoyment of playing.
| Cello Size | Player Height | Arm Length (Shoulder to Palm) | Approx. Age |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1/16 | Under 95 cm | Under 38 cm | 3 – 4 years |
| 1/10 | 95 – 105 cm | 38 – 41 cm | 4 – 5 years |
| 1/8 | 105 – 115 cm | 41 – 46 cm | 5 – 6 years |
| 1/4 | 115 – 130 cm | 46 – 51 cm | 6 – 8 years |
| 1/2 | 130 – 145 cm | 51 – 56 cm | 9 – 11 years |
| 3/4 | 145 – 160 cm | 56 – 60 cm | 11 – 13 years |
| 4/4 (Full size) | 160 cm and above | 60 cm and above | 14 years to adult |
Sizing a viola can be a bit more nuanced than sizing a violin, as violas come in a range of body lengths rather than fixed sizes like violins. Common viola sizes range from 12” to 17”, with the size best suited to the player's arm length and overall comfort while playing. To measure at home, have the player extend their left arm straight out to the side, and measure from the base of the neck to the middle of the palm. This gives a good indication of the maximum playable size. For example, a measurement of around 63–66 cm (25–26 inches) generally corresponds to a 16” viola, while shorter measurements may indicate a better fit with a 15” or 14” instrument.
For violinists transitioning to viola, it’s important to understand that even a slightly larger viola can feel significantly different. A 15” viola, for example, is roughly equivalent in body length to a 4/4 violin, but its wider bouts and deeper ribs make it bulkier and heavier. The spacing and tension of the strings also differ, so choosing the right size is essential for avoiding strain and maintaining proper technique. If in doubt, speak with your teacher or visit our showroom to try a few sizes. We can help you find a viola that feels natural, whether you're a new violist or a violinist adding a second voice to your playing.

Rental. Perfect for...
Designed for Players, Not for Landfill!
We are all for accessibility but cheap instruments, especially those found online, may seem tempting, but often they contain many hidden costs.. The most common is not coming set up which is a crucial process and part of the reason why quality instruments cost more - because they professional set up by a skilled luthier.
Not just that, cheap instruments are often made with questionable wood sources and use laminates which contain petrochemicals, can be produced under poor labour conditions, and shipped across the world only to last a short time before becoming landfill.
Quality instruments last for decades, not months, making them the most sustainable choice for both people and planet. By choosing our rental scheme, you support:
- Responsible timber use from reputable suppliers
- Fair labour practices in skilled workshops
- Reduced global transport footprint
- Long-term use and maintenance rather than disposable manufacturing
Many low-cost “starter” string instruments fail quickly, with warped bridges, slipping pegs, collapsing soundposts and unfixable build faults. They can’t be properly repaired or adjusted, leaving families to replace them again and again. Our rental instruments are made to be repaired, maintained and enjoyed - protecting your investment and your child’s enthusiasm.
